"Captain Joel Harvey Prouty" Bro. Joel
Harvey Prouty, for whom the Auburn Massachusetts Masonic Lodge is named,
was born in Spencer MA, September 27, 1837. His family later moved to
Worcester, MA where his father built their house at the King Farm in
Tatnuck. Bro. Prouty moved to the Town of Auburn in 1889, where he made
his home until his death, September 29, 1926. During the Civil War, Bro. Prouty made his way up from Private in the 6th Mass Volunteer Infantry to Lieutenant in the 51st Mass Volunteer Infantry and was honorably discharged from service in 1870 with the rank of Captain of Worcester Light Infantry. For about
60-years, Bro. Prouty was a member of Morning Star lodge, A.F. and A.M.,
at Worcester, MA. Prior to his death, Bro. Prouty had given his consent
for the use of his name for the new Masonic Lodge in Auburn. Bro. Prouty
expressed his pleasure that he should be so singly honored. On March 29,
1927, six months after Bro. Prouty’s departure to the Celestial Lodge
above, Most Worshipful Frank Simpson, Grand Master of Masons in
Massachusetts, chartered Joel H. Prouty Lodge A.F. & A.M. Bro. Prouty was widely known in the Town of Auburn, where he held many offices, serving as Master of the Auburn Grange, tax assessor and in other positions of civic responsibility and trust. His trade was that of pattern maker and his last employment was with the Eastern Bridge & Structural Company of Worcester.
