Joel H. Prouty Lodge A.F. & A.M. welcomes those qualified men who are interested in the possibility of joining our ranks to become a member of the largest and oldest Fraternity in the world and whose members and principles have shaped our country and our history.

Men age 18 and older who believe in a Supreme Being and meet the qualifications and standards for membership are eligible to petition a Lodge.  We welcome men of any race, religion, nationality, or opinion.

Freemasonry requires that a man cannot be compelled to join our Fraternity and that he must seek admission based on his “own free will and accord.”  Therefore, he must ask a member to sponsor his application.

The first step towards joining is to contact a family or friend who is a Mason or contact a Member of Joel H. Prouty Lodge and ask them to have consider you for membership.  Do ask your some of your friends to join with you.  The experience will only strengthen the bonds between you.

What is the application process?

  1. Applicants must be eighteen years of age, male and have belief in a Supreme Being.

  2. You must first contact a member of Joel H. Prouty Lodge to discuss your interest.  If you are not sure you know a member simply contact the Master of the Lodge.

  3. Upon answering any questions that you may have, a pre-application meeting will be arranged where you will meet with several members of the Lodge.  At this meeting, you will be presented a pre-application statement that outlines what freemasonry is and is not. Upon your acceptance of this document you will be provide with a formal application.

  4. You will need to bring the names and contact information of six personal references that can vouch for your character.  They need not be Masons.

  5. At the next regular business meeting, your application will be read openly to the membership of the lodge.

  6. During the one-month period following the reading of your application an investigation committee will be designated to meet with you, your family and your references to review the entries on your application and answer questions you may have.

  7. At the first meeting following the reading of your application and upon returns from the investigating committee, the entire membership present at the meeting will cast a secret ballot on your membership.

  8. Following your election to receive the first three degrees in Freemasonry your initiation will be scheduled.  This usually occurs within thirty-days of your election but scheduling conflicts can result in longer waits.

  9. The initiation comes in the form of three degrees: the Entered Apprentice Degree, the Fellowcraft Degree and the Master Mason Degree.  The entire three degrees generally requires three months to complete.  Each degree requires a great deal of work and preparation on the part of the Lodge and its officers and the one-degree per month schedule is the norm.
