AUBURN, March 30, 1927 - By the order of Grand Master Frank L. Simpson, Joel H. Prouty Lodge A.F. and A.M. was instituted in the Auburn Town Hall last night by District Deputy Grand Master Otis C. White of Worcester, assisted by Right Worshipful District Deputy Grand Marshal Harry Clegg Midgley of Shrewsbury under dispensation from the Grand Master. This is the second lodge to be instituted in the 21st Masonic District since Quinsigamond Lodge A.F. and A.M. was chartered September 15, 1871 and, largely because of the historic nature of the occasion, attracted the presence of Past Deputy Grand Master Herbert P. Bagley, 33d, of Worcester, past district deputies, and past and present master, line officers and members of the various Masonic Lodges in the district, as well as 48 of the 67 petitioners for dispensation, 66 of whom were of the Town of Auburn.

The Spungin Square ...

The Square is dedicated to our fallen Brother, Doctor Jacob Spungin, a very respected local physician and member of Joel H. Prouty Lodge. The property is actually a triangle given to Joel H. Prouty Lodge by the Town of Auburn to beautify and adorn. Spungin Square is bordered by Auburn Street, Orchard Street and Wethered Street.
Brother Spungin's office was right next door at one time and as you can see in the photos, there is a monument erected to his memory with square and compasses, which we keep lit for awhile each night. During the growing season Brothers and local Boy Scout Troop 101 plant flowers, pull weeds and spread mulch to keep it neat and tidy. In the winter months we light the big blue spruce and three smaller trees for everyone to enjoy.
